Freemasonry is not a faith, nor a philosophy in the academic sense of the term. It is a Way: a transformative journey that takes Man as he is — rough as the cubic stone awaiting the hand of the Artificer — and accompanies him towards the realisation of his highest potentialities, towards the polished stone that may find its place in the edifice of the universal Temple.
This journey is accomplished in the Lodges — spaces that are physical and spiritual at the same time — where Brothers and Sisters gather according to most ancient rites to work together upon the common Work. Every ceremony, every symbol, every ritual gesture is a language that speaks to the soul as well as to the mind, a key that opens inner doors otherwise impenetrable.

The Guilds of medieval Builders preserved secrets of Art and Science that went far beyond the techniques of construction. Within the lodges of the operative Masons, a tradition was born that, in time, opened itself to those who sought not stone to be squared, but the soul to be perfected.
The eighteenth century brought about the great transformation: Freemasonry became speculative, welcoming men of every condition who sought the Light of knowledge. The Lodges multiplied throughout Europe and the world, becoming crucibles of free thought and universal brotherhood.
In Italy, Freemasonry played a historically paramount role, animating the Risorgimento and the building of the unified State. Men of great intellect and virtue wore the apron and the compass, contributing to the history of the Nation with Masonic ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity.
